Robert's father was Archibald Galloway and his mother was Janet Galbraith.  His paternal grandparents were Robert Galloway and Helen McLauchlan. He had three brothers and five sisters, named Archibald, James, John, Mary, Ellen, Janet, Janet and Margaret.  He was the second oldest of the nine children.
