Helen's father was James Fairley and her mother was Allison Thomson. Her maternal grandparents were Andrew Thomson and Helen Cunningham. She had three brothers and three sisters, named Henry, Andrew, James, Christina, Isabella and Alison. She was the oldest of the seven children. She died at the age of 71 in 1917 in Ratho.
