David's father was George Dick and his mother was Margaret Paul.  His paternal grandparents were David Dick and Janet Grant. He had a brother and four sisters, named George, Margaret, Janet, Mary and Eliza.  He was the oldest of the six children.  He died at the age of 63 in 1896 in Greenock.²
