Alison was born in 1837 in West Lothian.1   Alison's father was Robert Dick and her mother was Alison Haston.  Her paternal grandparents were David Dick and Janet Grant. She had three sisters named Janet, Jean and Elisabeth.  She was the second youngest of the four children.
