Bruce was born in October 1780 in Denny and his baptism took place there on October 8th, 1780.

Bruce's father was William Bruce and his mother was Janet Newlands. He had a brother and four sisters, named Bruce, Mary, Isobell, Ann and Agnes.  He was the youngest of the six children.
