Helen's father was Dalrymple Bowman and his mother was Jane Taylor. His maternal grandparents were Andrew Taylor and Ann Scoffield. He had eight brothers and three sisters, named William, Andrew, Robert, George, David, Hugh, Dalrymple, Joseph, Janet, Annie and Elizabeth. He was the sixth youngest of the twelve children. He died at the age of 10 in 1868 in Riccarton.
