James' father was David Bone and his mother was Susan Hammond.  His paternal grandparents were David Bone and Margaret Smith. He had five brothers and six sisters, named William, David, John, William, Thomas, Agness, Margaret, Elisabeth, Elisabeth, Elspie and Susannah.  He was the sixth youngest of the twelve children.
