Studied in Pest, Esztergom and Vienna. In 1863, he was ordained a priest, in 1882 he was appointed parish priest at the Mátyás Templom in Buda and, a year later, was named prepost. He advanced from year to year in his calling, firstly becoming a notary then vice-dean. In 1880, he was appointed dean of Budapest. He had remarkable importance in the field of church music and musical history. He was elected secretary of the National Music School (1876-82). The government sent him overseas to study church music and he was elected a member of the academy.
