When he married Ann Hill in June 1849 at South Shields, he gave his occupation as Master Mariner, I have just looked at the entry for the 1861 census and find that he is listed as a Baker/Grocer living 17 Skinner Street, Whitby, in the 1881 he is back to being a Master Mariner but by the 1891 he is a Coal Merchant living is Scarborough where he died 2 years later. source: Katie Simpson (Hartlepool NE England)
