William (Jack) DICK William, known as Jack, was born in 1897 in Thornaby, Eng.. Jack's father was James DICK and his mother was Margerite Annie OATES. His paternal grandparents were James DICK and Ann; his maternal grandparents were John OATES and Ann. He had two brothers and four sisters, named James, Arthur, Annie, Phyllis, Maude and Bessie. He was the sixth oldest of the seven children.

- His life was blighted by weak legs and having to wear supporting ironwork. He earned his living as a boot/shoe repairer. He was the financial bedrock supporting No 17 Mansfield. . He was a determined man. He read a lot.....good books/newspapers/periodicals.........A poet and an aspirant hardworking novelist. He purchased a hand propelled invalid road-use carriage and would travel out in it. He would whizz past me on my bicycle going down local hills.
