    The book is incorrect. Reuben Samuel (?1761-1833) who
    married Mary "Polly" Letcher was NOT the son of another
    Reuben Samuel based on the following direct evidence given
    by his grandson:
    
    In 1922, at age 89 Charles Grandison Samuel (1833-1928)
    s/o Charles Patterson Samuel (1806-1878) filled out a
    questionnaire for Civil War veterans in which he indicated
    that his grandfather Reuben Samuel (who married Mary "Polly"
    Letcher) was the son of Giles Samuel and Jane Sullenger.
    
    Though arguable, this Giles Samuel was probably the son of
    Anthony Samuell, Jr. (?1681-1760) and Mary Ann Rogers.
    (See my message #287 in this forum.) Therefore, Reuben
    most likely was a resident of Caroline county, not
    Goochland county. The Letchers were from Goochland county
    and that is how that county became associated with Reuben
    (that is, by marriage). Several contemporaneous men named
    "Reuben Samuel" lived in Caroline county. If Reuben who
    married Letcher was ever called "Junior," it was merely to
    distinguish him from some other older Reuben and NOT an
    indication that his father was a Reuben (Sr).
