Sarah was born on May 3rd, 1767 in Botetourt Co., VA.  Sarah's father was Col William Preston and her mother was Susannah Smith.  Her paternal grandparents were Col John Preston and Elizabeth Patton; her maternal grandparents were Francis Smith and Elizabeth Waddi. She had five brothers and six sisters, named John, Francis Smith, William, James Patton, Thomas Lewis, Elizabeth, Susannah, Mary, Letitia, Margaret Brown and Ann.
