Thomas was born about 1640 in Jamestown Colony, Virginia.  Thomas' father was Capt Francis Poythress and his mother was Mary Frances Sloman Soloman.  His paternal grandparents are Joshua Poythress and Peachy; his maternal grandparents are John Sloman Soloman and Katherine Eppes. He had two brothers and a sister, named Francis, John and Jane or Mary.  He is the youngest of the four children. He had two half-brothers and a half-sister, named Thomas, Joshua and Mary.
