Ashford was born about 1732 in Goochland County, Virginia.  Ashford's father is Robert Napier Jr and his mother is Mary Tarleton Hughes.  His paternal grandparents are Robert Napier and Mary Perrin; his maternal grandparents are John Hughes and Sarah Tarleton.  He is an only child.
