Preston was born in 1805 in Bedford Co., Virginia.  Preston's father is Isham Goin and his mother is Susannah Sukey Sukie Sookie Bratcher.  His paternal grandparents are Daniel Goin and Ann Preston; his maternal grandparents are James and or Canada Canady Bratcher and Sarah Sally Sharpe. He had two brothers and a sister, named Daniel, John and Canada.  He is the second oldest of the four children.
