        (1c) 1722: Came to America at age 15. (1b) Family tradition says that one day,
        because he was punished in school and did not want to face certain future
        punishment at home, he ran away by stowing aboard a ship bound for America.
        (1a) Came to America when a boy. (1c) He left home due to a severe whipping,
        hid on board a vessel and was not discovered until well out at sea. (1d) Came
        from London, England to America. (1e) About 1740. Came to Philadelphia.
        (1a,c) Settled first near Philadelphia.
        (1a) Went to Hampshire, VA, below the mouth of the South Branch, 30 miles from
        Winchester.
        (1) Bef. 1744: Moved to near present day Wheeling, West Virginia, on a tributary of the
        Ohio River. (1d) Settled on a fork of the Potomac River not far from the
        present site of Romney, West Virginia, probably in the 1740's.
        (1) According to family tradition, sometime after his settlement in the VA back
        country, he was captured by Indians. (1a) EDGINGTON went to a tub mill
        belonging to EDWARDS, and there were about a dozen Dutch boys and girls also
        there at the mill. All had to stay overnight. The next morning, all were taken
        by the Indians, tomahawked or kidnapped. The Indians tomahawked the
        children, except two boys and EDGINGTON, in the mill and set it on fire and
        started for Fort Duquense. After going 3 miles, they killed the two remaining
        Dutch boys. In crossing a stream, an Indian walked over a log, leaving
        EDGINGTON, who waded; and when in the middle of the stream, he pulled in the
        Indian, who, when reaching the shore, aimed a tomahawk blow, which EDGINGTON
        partly dodged, splitting his nose and upper lip. The other Indians interfered
        and saved a repitition of the blow, tied up the wound, and took him first to
        Fort Duquesne, and then up the Scioto and kept him for 3 years. Two days
        after he was taken, his wife barely escaped, being with a couple of families
        of 8 persons, under protection of the soldiers going to Edwards Fort. All were
        waylaid and killed. (1c) He was captured near a grist mill and spent 3 years
        as a captive. He ran away from the Indians and became lost and returned to
        his captors, later being traded to the British.

        (1) 1774, 2 Oct: George EDGINGTON sold to Levi ASHBROOK 200 acres granted to
        William CUNNINGHAM and conveyed to EDGINGTON 10 Aug 1772, Hampshire Co., VA.
        (1) 1777, 23 Oct: George EDGINGTON of Hampshire Co., VA received a grant from
        Lord FAIRFAX for 226 acres near Dillon's Run, a branch of Great Cacayelion,
        Hampshire Co., VA, bounded as by a survey made by Elias POSTON, beginning at
        a Chestnut oak, the said EDGINGTON's corner, thence to James BRADY's corner,
        George NIXON's corner, crossing a frain of Dillon's Run to Michael LAUBINGER's
        line, to John ENGLE's corner, to EDGINGTON's corner, then to the beginning,
        with all rights, members and appurtenances, Royal Mines excepted, and a full
        third of all lead, copper, tin, coals, iron mine & iron ore that shall be
        found thereon.

        (1) 1779, 25 Aug: George EDGINGTON of Hampshire Co., VA received a grant for
        152 acres on both sides of the top of Riserman's Mountain in Hampshire Co.,
        surveyed 11 Nov 1762, beginning at 2 white oaks & spanish oak on the SE side
        of the mountain by the path that leads from EDGINGTON's to ASHBROOK's in his
        former line, crossing the mountain twice before returning to the beginning

        I'm looking for George EDGINGTON, Sr;Do you know of any documents that he was a ranger; spy; scout, frontiersman along the Ohio frontier and was captured by the Indians and held prisoner during the Revolutionary War. Krutilla has researched the sons but did not have any information on George, Sr. The 6 sons all have militia records. I'd love to have something on George, Sr. His only daughter, Jemima, is my direct line. Thank you very much.
