John was born in 1815 in Bedford Co., Virginia.  John's father was Jacob Coffer and his mother was Nancy Bateman.  His paternal grandfather was Josias Coffer and his paternal grandmother is Mary Catherine Lauchart Lockhart.  He was an only child.  He died at the age of 45 in 1860 in Bedford Co., Virginia.
