    There is some curious information in my possession in
    regard to the nativity of thi? Shikellamy, the father of Logan,
    showing that he was a Frenchman from Montreal, and consequently
    that the famous Logan was not a full blooded
    Indian. It is found in an excessively rare tract, entitled "
    Observations on the Inhabitants, Climate, Soil, Rivers,
    Productions, Animals, and other Matters worthy of Notice,
    made by John Bartram, in his Travels from Pennsylvania,
    to Onondago, Oswego and the Lake Ontario in Canada, to
    which is annex d a curious Account of the Cataracts of Nigara,
    by Peter Kalm, a /Sweedish Gentleman who traveled there,
    London 1751." In this journey Bartram was accompanied
    
    a chief in fostering the religion of Christ among
    the tribe. But when David Brainerd visited the
    Indian village, three years after, he found that
    the seed dropped by the Moravians had fallen
    on barren places. He was kindly received
    and entertained by the Indians, yet neither his
    request nor the illness of one of the tribe could
    induce them to forego their wild and noisy revels. "
    Alas," exclaims the journalist, " how destitute
    of natural affection are these poor uncultivated
    pagans, although they seem kind in their own
    way ! Of a truth, the dark corners of the earth
    are full of the habitations of cruelty. *****
    The Indians of this place are accounted the
    most drunken, mischievous, and ruffian-like
    by Lewis Evans, the geographer ; Conrad Weiser, the Indian
    interpreter ; and, from ShamoMn, by Shikellamy. "July
    10, 1743 : we departed in the morning with Shickellamy and
    his son, he being the chief man of the town which consisted
    of Delaware Indians; he was of the Six Nations, or rather
    a Frenchman born at Montreal, and adopted by the Oneidoes
    after being taken pr1soner ; but his son told me he was of
    the Cayuc/ava.tion — that of his mother — agreeable to the
    Indian rule, partus sequitur ventrcm, which is as reasonable
    among them as among cattle, since the whole burden of
    bringing up falls on her; therefore in case of separation the
