May 1, 1751, apprenticed to Gulean Ver Planck, wholesale merchant. Feb 14,
1755, apptd Ensign by Lt Gov James DeLancey, NY Co of Foot, where David
Abeel was Capt. Then worked for James Napier, Esq, Director of the British
General Hospital, Albany. Returned to NYC, 1757. Director of Supplies, NYC
hospitals. Lt, Apr 15, 1760. 1772, apptd Capt, in place of his father. In
Dec 1770, he refused to go to the Army, then at Boston, and was dismissed
from the British Hospital Service. Resigned at start of troubles with
England. Nov 3, 1775, Major, First Rgt, NYC Militia, under Col John Jay.
NY Committee of 100. NY Committee of Safety, 1776. Rep of NYC at White
Plains, 1776. Member, NY Provincial Congress, 1776-7.
