Samuel was born in 1865 in Ashbury, Cheshire.1   Samuel's father was Samuel Sproston and his mother was Paulina Archer.  His maternal grandparents were Samuel Archer and Sarah. He had four brothers and five sisters, named Harry, Job, Enos, James, Frances, Pauline, Sarah, Jane and Mary.  He was the oldest of the ten children.
