Mary was born in 1881 in Odd Rode, Cheshire.1   Mary's father was Samuel Sproston and her mother was Paulina Archer.  Her maternal grandparents were Samuel Archer and Sarah. She had five brothers and four sisters, named Samuel, Harry, Job, Enos, James, Frances, Pauline, Sarah and Jane.  She was the youngest of the ten children.
