Mary was born in 1844 in Great Barton, Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk.¹

Mary's father was Charles Rosier and her mother was Ann Plummer. Her paternal grandparents were Willaim Rosier and Mary Butcher; her maternal grandparents were John Plummer and Rachel Middleditch. She had six brothers and seven sisters, named William, George, John, Harry, Alfred, Alfred, Elizabeth, Ellen, Eliza, Amelia, Alice, Jane and Ruth. She was the oldest of the fourteen children.
