Lilian was born in 1903 in Scarborough, Yorkshire.1   Lilian's father was Harry Oldroyd and her mother was Margaret Ann.  Her paternal grandparents were Fred Oldroyd and Clara. She had a brother and three sisters, named Fred, Alice, Ida and Clara.  She was the second oldest of the five children.
