Joseph was born in 1845 in Stockport, Cheshire.¹

Joseph's father was Thomas Gamble and his mother was Mary Thorpe. His paternal grandparents were Stephen Gamble and Alice Walker. He had three brothers and a sister, named William, John, George and Anne. He was the youngest of the five children. He died at the age of 65 in 1910 in Stockport, Cheshire.¹
