Emily was born in 1881 in Stockport, Cheshire.1   Emily's father was Thomas Elson and her mother was Abigal.  Her paternal grandparents were Patterson Elson and Catherine. She had five sisters named Sarah, Mary, Eliza, Florence and Elizabeth.  She was the third youngest of the six children.
