Johanna was born in 1902.  Johanna's father was Axel Arvid Fremling and her mother was Christine Emelia Tervola.  Her paternal grandparents were Rev Karl Framling and Maria Frederika Laine; her maternal grandparents are Olaf Tervola and Annie Hanson. She had seven brothers and a sister, named Charlie, Axel, John, Rueben, Harold, Charles, Thedore and Ida. She had three half-brothers and two half-sisters, named Donald, Harold, Axel, Edna and Lillian.
