Henry, known as The Black, was born on October 28th, 1017 in Oosterbeek, Schwaben, Bavaria.1  The Black's father was Emperor Conrad (The Salian) of Saxony II and his mother was Gisela of Swabia.  His paternal grandparents were Count Henry of Saxony and Adelaide of Alsace; his maternal grandparents were Duke Hermann of Swabia I and Gerberga of Burgundy. He had a sister named Beatrix.  He was the older of the two children. He had four half-brothers and a half-sister, named Ernst, Hermann, Leopold, Ludwig and von Braunschweig.  He died at the age of 38 on October 5th, 1056 in Bodfeld, Hartz, Germany.2
