Next to Catharine's grave was the grave of her & Joshua's daughter, Sarah C..  Sarah's stone was almost unreadable.  (See  Sarah's notes.)  The cemetery in Newcomerstown is located at the intersection of West St. & State St.  From Hwy 36, turn on Pilling St., go to Canal St., turn on West St. and continue.  Turn in the 1st drive, continue a very short distance until you see a large gray stone facing the drive,  with the name of MULVANE, on the same plot is a large gray stone with the name of DENT, Catharine & Sarah's graves are near the cemetery fence. There are 2 large Cedar trees & 1 small Cedar tree near the graves.  You will walk past some stones of the NICODEMUS family & a large gray stone with the name SCHURTZ before you get to the trees.  The next stones after the trees are Catharine & Sarah.

1860 census- Oxford Twp., Coshocton Co., Post Office: White Eyes Plains-Joshua age 35, Catharine age 22, Sarah age 2 & Emma age 2 mo. (born Mar. or Apr. of 1860).  On the census Emma is listed as unknown female.  In the 1910 census of Isaac L. Book & Emma Norman her age is listed as 50 years making her born in 1860.  The 1860 census- Cath<a>rine is spelled with an "a" not an "e".  Her grave stone is spelled "CATHARINE"

I am unable to find any info on Catherine other than her marriage to Joshua.

If the age listed for her in the 1860 census, 22 years, is correct, & I believe it to be, and if their marriage date is correct, which I believe it to be, since their marriage is listed in the Coshocton County marriage records, then she would have been 15 or 16 at the time of her marriage to Joshua.

Sarah is not listed on the 1870 census.  She is listed on the 1860 census for Oxford Twp, Coshocton Co., OH.  Her death occurred between 1860 & 1870.

April 2006 - Found Sarah's grave in Newcomerstown, Ohio Cemetery.  Stone was nearly unreadable.  The only portion I was able to read was her death date & age.  Her name was not readable, but going by her age I am sure the grave was that of Sarah.  She is buried next to her mother, Catharine, in the Newcomwerstown Cemetery.  DB

Post Em to Emma Norman @ World Connect @ Rootsweb by Ty Coup on 11/8/2008:
From the November 1, 1928 Abilene Weekly Reflector-Chronicle
Emma Normon was born in Mar. 24, 1861 near Orange, in Cuyahoga Co., Ohio. She married Isaac L. Book on Jan. 17, 1886. She died on Saturday, October 27, 1928 in Abilene KS.

From the October 29, 1928 Abilene Reflector-Chronicle
Emma Norman was born at Orange, Ohio, March 24, 1861, where she spent the first ten years of her girlhood. Then she moved with her parents to Illinios where they resided for a time. Later they returned to Ohio for several years, when they returned to Illinois for a short while until the spring of 1880, when they moved to Dickinson County, KS.

On the 17th day of January, 1886, she was united in marriage to Isaac L. Book. They began their happy home in this country and lived here until the spring of 1892 when they moved to State Center, Iowa, where they resided until the spring of 1903 when they returned to Dickinson county, locating at Talmage, where they lived continously until the fall of 1925, at which time they came to Abilene, where they lived until she passed away, Saturday, October 27, 1928.

There were six children born to Mr and Mrs Book, all of whom survive their mother, and greatly mourn their loss. The are Roy N. Book of Augusta, KS., Mrs. Pearl Martin of Los Angeles, CA., who was unable to be present; Mrs. F.L. Chase, Manhattan; Noah N. Book, Emporia; Floyd N. Book, of Salinas, CA.; likewise unable to attend his mothers funeral, and Harold C. Book of Abilene. This is the first death that has come to this good family. Mrs. Book is also survived by her two brothers, Joe Norman of Abilene and Frank Norman of Omaha, NE, and four half-brothers, Jim and Charley Norman, both of Hills Summit, Dan Norman of Abilene, and Tom Norman of Los Angeles, CA. She is also survived by nine grandchildren, other relatives, and many friends.

Headline: Keene Kernals
A merry time was had at Mr. Archibald Burrell's a few days  ago, upon the reunion of Mrs. Burrell's brothers.  Those present were Capt. Joshua Norman and brother John, of Abilene, KS., David & Henry, of Newcomerstown, G.W. Norman of Keene, and several of Mr. Burrell's children.  The united ages of the four brothers and sisters, was 350 years, and yet all are healthy and looking young.
Traits:  John was the best looking, Joshua the heaviest and ate the most dinner, Henry the most pious, and David - well he kissed all the women in the house and smacked his lips at the goddess of Liberty sitting on the mantel.  The dinner, well, what's the use of telling, it was such as only Mrs. Burrell and her daughters know how to prepare.

They parted scarcely expecting to all meet again in this life.

The Norman plot in the Abilene, KS. Cemetery is on the west side, close to the front of the cemetery.  It is a large plot with 10 graves on it.  The stone is a large gray spire stone, set at an angle facing the southwest.  You can read the name "Norman" from a distance away.  It has a cement border surrounding the plot. At each corner is a small ground level concrete post with the letter N.

Inscription on large tombstone - Abilene, KS. cemetery:

Born Sept. 26, 1824
Died Mar. 14, 1906
Farewell dead father

Edna Mae Norman & her husband Willard C. Colvin.
Charles C. Norman & his wife Martha and their daughter, Wilma
James H. Norman and his wife Cora J.

Joshua owned land in Sec. 19, Twp. 12S - Range 2 E, Dickinson Co., KS.  Not known what years this land was owned.

Joshua & Martha lived at 404 West South Fourth St. - Abilene, KS. in the years 1905-1906 per the City Directory.  He was listed as retired.

Joshua was referred to as Captain.  I can't find any record (as of 2009) of him serving in the Civil War.  I am, therefore, leaning toward him being a river boat Captain, perhaps on the Ohio River.  Strictly guesswork (2009) on that theory.

According to my sister, Mary, our father, William H. Jr. was injured at birth.  She said he was a breech baby and the midwife pulled on his legs and either dislocated or broke one of his legs and it was never properly taken care of, so his one leg was shorter than the other.  It never seemed to be a handicap for him as he spent his life as a farmer, meat cutter and operating grocery stores in the Story Co. area and in his later life was a meat cutter for the Council Oak Stores of Iowa.  He had a very easy going personality and got along tremendously well with all his customers and was very well liked by all who knew him.  At the time of his death he was in Spencer, IA. setting up the meat market in the Council Oak Store there.  He died of a massive heart attack at the age of 54.

Bromley, IA., William's birthplace was platted Sept. 21, 1881, by Charles E. Bromley, and located in Section 1, Minerva Township, Marshall Co., IA. on the Story City branch of the Iowa Central Railroad.

Vera was a hard working woman, taking care of her mother-in-law, Mary F. Waldie Clemons, until Mary's death and then Vera worked outside the home. She often worked in the same grocery store with my father.  They operated 2 grocery stores of their own in Ames, IA. & 1 in Colo, IA.  Mother came at the age of 16 (1913) to live with her sister, Carrie & husband Roy Perry at Colo, IA.  Their father Benjamin had moved back to Kansas & married his 2nd wife and that did not work out for my mother.  She worked in nursing homes after the death of my father and then at the Overland Cafe in Ames in the Caramel Corn Stand and in her very late life, just before her death she worked for the Food Service at Iowa State University.  She spent some of the years taking care of my sister, Norma's, 4 children.  She truly enjoyed doing that.  She died of a heart attack while watching her afternoon soap operas.

"Frank" traveled by covered wagon from Ohio at the age of 13, with his father, Joshua & Joshua's third wife, Martha Jones, and Frank's brothers & sisters.

For some reason my mother never had much to do with her father when I was a small child.  The reason could have been just distance & no means of transportation.  She did visit him just before his death and we attended his funeral as a family traveling from Pocahontas, IA. to Des Moines, IA. in a 1935 Pontiac.
