OBITUARY OF CHARLES EASTIN
From the Charleston [Coles Co., ILL.] Courier, 21st. inst. [Sept. 1865]
DEATH OF THE FIRST WHITE CHILD BORN IN LEXINGTON, KY.

Major Charles Eastin who was the first white male child born in Lexington, Ky., died at the residence of his son, Capt. J.M. Eastin, in this city, [Charleston, Illinois], Saturday afternoon last, verging closely on 90 years of age [sic, 82 years of age]. He married in Shelbyville, Kentucky in 1803, [sic, 1805], and from there emigrated to Indiana, while it was yet a Territory, and settled in Madison. He volunteered for the war of 1812 and 14 under Col. Dunn in Indiana, and was in General Harrison's campaign in the North-West. After the war was over, he was elected Malitia [sic] Major, a title he bore ever afterwards. Maj. Eastin removed from Indiana to this State [Illinois] in the spring of 1830 and settled about eight miles west of this city. What is now Coles County was then Clark. [both counties in Illinois.] Coles was formed by the Legislature the fall or winter succeeding the spring that Maj. Eastin settled here. He was therefore a citizen of the county before it had received its present name. Maj. Eastin has been entirely blind for some six or seven years past. His aged wife and five children, out of thirteen, three daughters and two sons, survive him. His remains were followed to their last resting place Monday forenoon, by a large concourse of citizens.
Long his name, his fame and glory,
Joined in our hearts with the land of his birth--
And let not his deeds live brightest in story,
Chanted and sung by the fairest of earth.
Keep bright the stars, that he left to your keeping,
Soil not the Banner -- for aye let it wave,
Over the land where the hero is sleeping--
Never should land be so proud of a grave!"

1755 - 1817 Philip Lt. EASTIN 62 62 16. Philip Lt. EASTIN  was born about 1755.
Philip served as a Lt. in the Revolutionary War, serving in the Virginia Continental Line. As a result of his service he was issued a Bounty Land Warrent for 3110 2/3 acres of land. The warrant is dated 4-8-1873. There is no record (a/o 11/95) that this warrant was executed.

Military Record: Served as a private, Feb.27,1777, in Capt. Thomas Berry's Company, Eight Virginia Regiment commanded by Colonel Abraham Bowman. Commissioned Ensign, May 20,1777, 2nd Lt. Oct.1, 1778, retired Jan 1, 1783. Died 1817.( From Letter to Commissioner of Pensions from George W. Polk, San Antonio, Texas Abt 1920)

From the "CALANDARS OF VIRGINIA STATE PAPERS & OTHER MANUSCRIPTS" p 1786 a deposition from Phillip Eastin:

"Deposed that on Tuesday 26, Sept., 1786, this Depondent has served for seven years in the regular army in the Virginia Continental Line, and bore a Lieutenants' Commission, which place he filled with propriety, and that, on the day above mentioned(?) the said Deponent was taken out of his own house, and the door forced open by a certain James Kenny, Lieutenant, commanding a party of men.

The said Kenny let this Deponent ride one of the horses for about a half a mile, then they made the s'd Deponent walk and run until he lost his shoes; then they tied this deponent round the middle with a rope and tied the rope to a horse's tail, and they rode on briskly and made the s'd deponent run after them until he fell down, and then they drug him, the s;d Deponent,on the ground tied to a horse for a considerable distance, which much very hurt the s;d deponent, so that he was not able to march, and borrowed a horse to return home on, which was ten miles distance from the camp; and this deponent made application to Col. Rob't Patterson, who commanded the militia from Fayette, and he would give him no redress, only gave him, the s;d deponent, a pass to return to Lexington to recruit himself and then to follow the army"

It is not known why this deposition was given.

He died on 14 Jun 1793 in Albemarle County,Va. Thomas EASTIN was born in 1725 in Possibly: Devonshire,England. He died on 14 Jun 1793 in Albemarle County, Va
If you are a descendant of Thomas Eastin of Albemarle County,Virginia, There are two stories about Thomas's place of birth: neither of which has been verified, but both sound logical. The first "legend" we say legend because neither produce documented evidence to confirm the truth- is that there were three "Thomas Eastins," probably cousins, who migrated to America in the early-to-mid 18th century. Two of them settled in Rhode Island, or Vermont, or Pennsylvania ("take your pick!"), and the third settled in Virginia. The second "legend" is that the family was French, and that the name was originally "d'Estaing." They were Hugenots who fled their native country during the religious persecution, taking refuge in England where the name was Anglicized into "Eastin." The English also persecuted them, so they moved on to Scotland where conditions proved to be no better. Still maintaining their own faith, they migrated again, this time to American colonies. Please let me know your story.

Notes for THOMAS EASTIN: Albemarle County records show that Thomas Eastin was a resident of that county in 1778 when, at age 53, he bought land from Thomas Walker. He was still a legal resident of Albemarle Co at the time he sold the same land to Chiles Terrell in 1850 (Albemarle County Deed Records). In Mary Rawlings' book "The Albemarle County of Other Days" (Charlottesville, Virginia: The Michie Co. 1925 - page 22.), the author states that Nicholas Meriwether was the original grantee of a large tract of land which was partitioned as early as 1739, a large portion "east" of the South West Mountain going to the widow of Nicholas Meriwether III. When the Widow Meriwether married Dr. Thomas Walker, this portion of the Original grant became known as "Castle Hill". It, in turn, was subdivided many times, resulting in plantations named "Cismont", "Castalia," "Music Hall," Belvoir," "Kilmnloch," "Merrie Hill," and others. This is the same Thomas Walker who in 1778 for 40 pounds deeded 171 acres "on top of the little mountains' to Thomas Eastin, who, in turn, sold the same tract seven years later (1785) to Chiles Terrell for 75 pounds (Deed Book 7, Albemarle Cou, Virginia, pages 178-179). We know he once lived or certainly owned property on the Fluvanna and Albemarle County lines, as his grandson, Stephen L. Eastin, subsquently homesteaded property in Fluvanna County from which Monticello may still be seen "when the leaves have fallen".

He was married to Sarah WHITLOCK abt 1744. Sarah WHITLOCK was born abt 1728. She died Unknown. Thomas and Sarah Whitlock had eleven definitely identified; children. Two children, Samuel and Walker are also believed to be his sons. Six more children-all whom died in infancy or early childhood-make a total of 19 children!

He was married to Sarah WHITLOCK (daughter of Thomas WHITLOCK) about 1744. Sarah WHITLOCK was born about 1728. Thomas EASTIN and Sarah WHITLOCK had the following children:

child+11 i. John EASTIN.
child12 ii. Daughter EASTIN was born about 1746. She died in 1753.
