Thomas FitzGerald, 10th Earl of Kildare (1513–1537), also known as Silken Thomas (Irish: Tomás an tSíoda), was a figure in Irish History. He spent a considerable part of his early life in England. In February 1534, when his father, Gerald FitzGerald, the 9th Earl of Kildare, was summoned to London, he appointed Thomas deputy governor of Ireland in his absence. In June Thomas heard rumours that his father had been executed in the Tower of London and that the English government intended the same fate for himself and his uncles. He summoned the Council to St Mary's Abbey, Dublin, and on 11 June, accompanied by 140 horsemen with silk fringes on their helmets (from which he was given his nickname), rode to the abbey and publicly renounced his allegiance to King Henry VIII, Lord of Ireland.

In July he attacked Dublin Castle, but his army was routed. By this time his father had taken ill and died in London, and he had succeeded as tenth earl. He retreated to his stronghold at Maynooth, County Kildare, but in March 1535 this was taken by an English force under Sir William Skeffington while Thomas was absent gathering reinforcements to relieve it. The garrison was given the "Maynooth Pardon", that is, they were all put to death

In July Lord Leonard Grey arrived from England as Lord Deputy of Ireland; Fitzgerald, seeing his army melting away and his allies submitting one by one, asked pardon for his offences. He was still a formidable opponent, and Grey, wishing to avoid a prolonged conflict, guaranteed his personal safety and persuaded him to submit unconditionally to the king's mercy. In October 1535 he was sent as a prisoner to the Tower. Sir Anthony Browne (d. 6 May 1548) was the son of Sir Anthony (or Ambrose) Browne, Standard Bearer of England and Governor of Queenborough Castle, by his wife Lucy Nevill, daughter of John Neville, 1st Marquess of Montagu.

He married Alice, daughter of Sir John Gage, and their children included:

Anthony Browne, 1st Viscount Montagu;
Mary Browne, who married John Grey of Pirgo and was the mother of Henry Grey, 1st Baron Grey of Groby;
Mabel Browne, who married Gerald FitzGerald, 11th Earl of Kildare.
He was made a Knight of the Garter in 1540.

Edward Seymour, 1st Earl of Hertford (1539–1621) was the son of Edward Seymour, 1st Duke of Somerset, by his second wife Anne Stanhope.

Following Somerset's disgrace and execution, his son regained the lost earldom of Hertford in 1559, from Queen Elizabeth I, but lost it again shortly afterwards, for secretly marrying Lady Catherine Grey, sister of Lady Jane Grey. Lady Catherine was a potential claimant to Elizabeth's throne. Seymour's penalty was a long term of imprisonment. His son was Edward Seymour, Baron Beauchamp of Hache (1561–1612) whose son William Seymour, 2nd Duke of Somerset was imprisoned for secretly marrying Arbella Stuart. In fact, Edward, William, and William's elder brother, another Edward, were all, at various times, considered possible matches for Arbella.

Edward Seymour, 1st Duke of Somerset (c.1506 – January 22, 1552) was Lord Protector of England in the period between the death of King Henry VIII in 1547 and his own indictment in 1549. He was born in about 1506 to Sir John Seymour and Margaret Wentworth. Edward was the eldest brother of Jane Seymour, who would become King Henry's third Queen consort. Their brother, Thomas, also gained power through their sister's advancement. His first marriage to Catharine Fillol was annulled when it was discovered she was having an affair with his father, John Seymour. His second marriage was to Anne Stanhope.

When Jane married the King in 1536, Seymour was created Viscount Beauchamp, and the next year Earl of Hertford. He became Warden of the Scottish Marches and continued in favour after his sister's death in 1537. He retained great influence over the boy king Edward VI, in whose name he ruled the country, and was created Duke of Somerset early in King Edward's reign. Following his victory over the Scots at the Battle of Pinkie Cleugh, his position appeared unassailable. However, the Seymour brothers had accumulated enemies and grudges during their time in royal favour, and, shortly after his brother Thomas's downfall, Edward, too, fell from power. His position, although not his office of Protector, was taken by John Dudley, 1st Earl of Warwick, later 1st Duke of Northumberland, and he was executed for treason at Tower Hill on January 22, 1552.

The earldom was later temporarily regained by Somerset's son, Edward Seymour, 1st Earl of Hertford.

Edward Clinton, 1st Earl of Lincoln (1512 – 16 January 1585) was an English admiral during the 16th century.

Born in Scrivelsby in Lincolnshire in 1512 to Thomas Clinton, 8th Baron Clinton and Mary Clinton, Baroness Clinton (née Poynings), the then Lord Clinton joined the retinue of King Henry VIII at Boulogne and Calais in 1532. Serving in the Parliament of 1536 he later served in the Royal Navy against French and Scottish naval forces from 1544 to 1547. Knighted in Edinburgh by Edward Seymour, 1st Earl of Hertford, (later 1st Duke of Somerset) for his role in the capture of the city in 1544 he also took part in the siege of Boulogne in 14 September 1544. Under John Dudley, 2nd Earl of Warwick he saw action against the French at the Battle of Spearhead in 1545 and was sent as one of the peace commissioners to France the following year. Commanding the English fleet during the invasion of Scotland by Edward Seymour he provided naval artillery support at the Battle of Pinkie on 15 September 1547. Appointed Governor of Boulogne in 1547, he successfully defended the city against a French siege from 1549 to 1550. That same year, with Henry Manners, 2nd Earl of Rutland, he became the Lord-Lieutenant of Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire as well as serving as Lord High Admiral under King Edward VI from 1550 to 1554, and again from 1559 to 1585, and as Privy Counsellor from 1550 to 1553, briefly serving as an envoy to France in 1551. After becoming the Lord-Lieutenant of Lincolnshire in 1552, Clinton later took part in the defeat of Wyatt's Rebellion in Kent in 1554. Becoming Lord General of Lord Pembroke's expedition he fought with Spanish forces at the Battle of Saint-Quentin on 10 August 1557. Upon his return to England, Clinton took command of the English fleet and began raiding the French coast burning the town on Conquet and the surrounding area in 1558. A joint commander with Ambrose Dudley, 3rd Earl of Warwick of a large army during the Northern Rebellion however the army was still being assembled when the rebellion was defeated in January 1570. He was created Earl of Lincoln in 1572, and served as ambassador to France,undertaking several commissions from Queen Elizabeth I until his death in London on 16 January 1585.
