2. Henry was one of the early Long Hunters of 1761-1775 of which Kentucky Historians have recorded much about. He was considered very prominent in the settlement of early Kentucky.

Indians attacked, stole the game his party had collected and frightened most of the hunters back to camp, leaving Henry alone with his young son and another hunter named Sinclair. Shortly after the three of them started further into the wilderness, Sinclair drowned in the icy Green River. Then young Skaggs took sick and died. The old hunter left his son's body in a hollow log, the ground being frozen too hard for a proper burying........which son?
5. When the gospel was first sent to the Green River section of Kentucky, the land was wild and uncultivated. Alas! for the poor Baptists, death at the hands of a lawless savage was an ever present chill on the hearts of the living, and who could tell whether it would continue to advance with the quiet of a blight, or vet burst upon them with the fury of a tempest?
A great number of these first Baptists were among the "Long Hunters" who came from the "Baptist Valley" area of Southwest Virginia.'
These families were the forerunners of the "foot-washing" Baptists which subsequently moved into Kentucky and established many of the Baptist Churches of the frontier land. Among the leaders was the Skaggs family consisting of Rev. James Skaggs and his brothers Henry, Richard, Jacob, Charles, Moses, and William. These were the early "Long Hunters" of 1761-1775 of which the Kentucky historians have recorded much about. Henry and Richard were particularly prominent. Henry Skaggs was at the present site of Bowling Green. Kentucky in 1775. A brother, Moses, was killed by Indians on his second trip into Kentucky.
Richard Skaggs had three sons named Shadrach, Mashack, and Abednego. It was Mashack who was killed by Indians on the creek named after him in present Monroe County, Kentucky.
The men who lived on the frontier took protracted hunting trips into Kentucky, hence the name "Long Hunters." Later when Daniel Boone led a group of Yadkin farmers into Kentucky, they used a wilderness track referred to as the "Skaggs Trace." This track became a part of the Boone Trace and Wilderness Road that led the pioneers into Kentucky from Virginia.
The first settlement of the Green River Baptists was in Green County in 1780, and was known as Skaggs Station. It was established by Rev. James Skaggs and was the third station in what is now Green County, Ky.; Glovers Station having been established in the Fall of 1779, and Pitman's Station in March of 1780.

VA to place a line "fixed along Clinch Mt. and Montgomery line to the

Henry, the Long Hunter, died 1809-1810, and his will is recorded in
Green Co., Book 1, p. 48. In W. R. Jillson's Kentucky Land Grants, Henry SKAGGS obtained 400 acres on Pitman Creek, Nelson Co., March 15, 1791. Pitman Creek begins in present-day Taylor County and runs southwest into Green County where it empties into the Green River. He lived in the northeast sector of present day Green Co.


"According to Virgil Skaggs, a genealogy researcher of Independence,MO. the first known people to enter America by the name of Skaggs was two brothers and a sister, who came over from Scotland about 280 years ago(about 1700). The Skaggs originally came from Norway and was spelled Skeg, meaning "bearded one", from Skeg to Skeggs, and Skaggs.They went from Norway to England and Scotland. The English way to spell the name was Skegs or Skeggs and the Scottish way was Scaggs. The two brothers who came to America argued over how to spell their name, the English way or the Scottish way. One brother said"you spell it your way and I will spell it my way", so the story goes. From this, four tribes were created, a Moses tribe, Gideon, Noah and an Elijah tribe of Skaggs. There is a Skaggs plantation at Alderson, W.Va. that was bought from William Penn. The plantation is still in the Skaggs family at the time Mr. Virgil Skaggs wrote this, late 1960's.

Henry, Charles and Richard Skaggs, and three other brothers were granddsons of an Irishman who fled from Ireland of Londonderry in 1688-'89, when so many of the Scotch-Irish race emigrated to the shores of the New World. We find his adventureous decendants, natives of Maryland, living on the frontiers of New River and sharing largely in the toils and hardships of the Long Hunters in 1770-'71.
In June 1775, we find Henry aiding to pilot Col. Thomas Slaughter and others on an exploratory tour of the Green River country. Henry Skaggs and brothers were a noted family of hunters and nothing but hunters, and keeping pace with the advancing settlements, they pushed forward to Clinch River and were forting in 1777 at Shadrach White's Station in the neighborhood of the Maiden Spring Fork of the Clinch. In 1781 one of the family of Skaggs, who had been residing in the Cumberland settlements removed to Kentucky.
In 1779 Henry Skaggs , accompanied by upwards of twenty men, started for Kentucky, were attacked by indians in Powells Vally, lost part of their horses, when all had returned save Skaggs, his son John a mere youth, and a man named Sinclair. With eleven horses, they went to the Green River country to hunt, and during the succeding winter Sinclair got lost, probably drowned in the Green River and young Skaggs sickened and died, and amidst the severities of the season a hollow log was his burial place. His father was left alone to finish the hunt and return home with the horses, pelts and furs. He settled on Pitmans Creek in the Green River country within present Taylor County, Kentucky, in 1789 with his children and connections around him sharing freely in the indian difficulties of the times; and there he died in 1808 or '9, aged upwards of eighty years. Possing a large and bony frame, he was bold, enterprising and fearless. In the name of God Amen, I HENRY SKAGGS of the County of Green and state of Kentucky do make this my last Will and Testament in manner and form following (To wit) I leave all my Estate both real and personal to my beloved Wife to be enjoyed by her during her life, and after her death, the tract of Land wher on I now live I give to my Grand son JOHN SKAGGS son of JAMES SKAGGS; my Negro man Bob I give to my son DAVID SKAGGS; my negro woman Lucy I give to SYLVIA ROARK; I give to my Daughter SARAH

Third Progenitor: Richard Skaggs and Mary Thear
Some genealogists refer to her as Mary Hatch. Many second and third marriages occurred among pilgrims as the men were killed or died young. Richard was one of the famous "Long Hunters of Kentucky" who helped supply food to the settlers in the colonies... land grants... centered around Meadow Creek of NewRiver in Virginia.

William Skaggs was a Private in theVirgina Militia. He entered the service 1 March 1778 to serve as an Indian Spy until 1 Nov 1778. He enlisted in 1779 under the command of Capt. Mastin and in the regiment under the command of Col. Shelby, in Clinch River, in Virginia. William was born in 1757, in North Carolina near Horse Pasture, North Carolina. Willia married Polly Beavee, 2 Sept 1802. William died 20 Aug 1848 in Green County, Kentucky.

William SKAGGS married Mary SIMPSON in 1778 in Virginia. In 1780 William came to Kentucky with his family and settled in one of the three forts that were built in Green County about this time. William's uncle established SKAGGS Station near Allendale, however, William spent some time at Pitman's Station, which is north of present day Greensburg. William's father, I believe name Jacob, also settled nearby. William and Mary lived at the fort until about a year later, when indians caused the three forts to be abandoned. William took his family to the then county seat at Bardstown. They lived there for several years and then returned back to the Green County area.

(William SKAGGS or Squire SKAGGS as he was called, lived on Brush Creek near present day Allendale. He was a magistrate and well known citizen of Green County. A member of the Liberty Baptist Church, he is buried just west of Hwy 61 near the Jct of Hwy 566 in the SKAGGS Cem. The tombstone reads, "In memory of William SKAGGS, Born 1754, Died 2_ August 1848." The James PIERCE bible lists Williams birth date as 20 Dec 1757). William SKAGGS is mentioned several times in Allen's, History of Kentucky, and Wm. is gone but never forgotten.

Wm. SKAGGS is appointed guardian to the infant heirs of Stephen SKAGGS dec'd and also the infant heirs of James SKAGGS dec'd. it is ordered that Math. OWENS, James SCOTT & Wm. BARNETT be appointed Commissioners to divide the land of James SKAGGS, Senr. dec'd. between the sons and daughters of his three sons Stephen SKAGGS, Henry SKAGGS, & James SKAGGS which three sons have departed having rec'd a joint deed from their father for said land this life. William (Polly) Skaggs, W2182, BLWT 27564-160-55
August 23, 1832, Green County, Kentucky, William Skaggs, resident of
said county, aged 75 years born (b. 1757) stated that he entered the
service of the United States under the following officers and served
as herein stated.

In 1778 in the month of March he was called and entered the service
as an Indian Spy and continued to serve until the last of October or
the first of November in the same year. He entered into the service
in the State of Virginia, the name of the county not now recollected,
but it was near the head of the Clinch River in the company commanded
by Captain Thomas Mastin. While in service he and Thomas Ray were
allotted to scout as spies in the boundary laid off commencing at the
head of the Clinch River and extending to the "Big Cain brake" on Big
Sandy River, a distance of about twenty-five miles. It was made their
duty to go about one mile below the cane brake for the purpose of
meeting two other spies. On one excursion as they were proceeding
from the head of the Clinch River to the line (?) of their boundary
and on their way they discovered that some Indians had taken up
another fork of the Sandy along a "Buffellow" track which led toward
the country settled by the whites, so as soon as they made the
discovery they turned their course and endeavored to reach the
settlement before the Indians so that some efficient means might be
effected for the purpose of repelling their invasions. When they
reached the settlement they were informed that the Indians had
reached some parts of the settlement the night before and attempted
to conduct some depredations and that they had attacked the father of
said William as he was returning from a neighbor's house and pursued
him with such violence that he was compelled to turn and fire, by
which he was successful in putting an end to one of his pursuers.

In the spring of 1779, the month not recollected, he enlisted in the
Virginia militia in the State of Virginia and near the head of the
Clinch River in a company commanded by Captain Mastin in the regiment
commanded by Colonel Shelby and served three months. Immediately
after his enlistment Colonel Shelby, together with his corps, made a
tour by water down to the "Chickemaugy" town on the south side of the
Tennessee River which town was entirely settled by the Cherokee
Indians, which they invaded, killing many Indians. After they put to
flight and destroyed the inhabitants of the place, they put fire to
the town and entirely consumed it. When the destruction of the town
was completed Captain Bean proposed raising a scouting party for the
purpose of searching for some of the inhabitants of the town who had
made their escape. Some thirty soldiers joined Bean, among whom was
WILLIAM SKAGGS. They left the main army and marched a north course
across the Cumberland Mountains. Shortly after they had crossed the
mountains they discovered an encampment of the Indians which they
immediately invaded and three of the Indians and took three
prisoners. In that attack he had the good fortune to take a squaw as
a prisoner. After this success they marched to meet the main army and
fell in with them at their encampment on a small creek. They were
marched from there to Powells Valley when owing to the great scarity
of provisions, the army was disbanded, and they marched home where
they were discharged. He received a written discharge from Captain
Mastin which he kept for many years, but it was consumed in the
flames of the roof which protected his family in conjunction with all
his household property. He had no documentary evidence of his service
whatever nor is there any living witness within his knowledge by whom
he could establish the same in any part thereof.

William Skaggs was born in 1757 in North Carolina. Charles Blevins,
clergyman, of Green County, Kentucky, and Samuel Brent, resident of
the same, certified that they were acquainted with William Skaggs,
who was a soldier of the Revolution.

March 10, 1853, Green County, Kentucky, Mrs. Polly Skaggs, resident
of said county, 80 years old, (1773) stated that she was the widow of
William Skaggs, deceased, who was a pensioner of the Revolutionary
War. He resided in Green County for a number of years and up to the
time he died. After his death she drew a fraction of a pension which
was due from the last semi-annual draw to the time he died. The fact
of the death and the time of death of Skaggs and the rate of pension
was certified and filed.

She was married to William Skaggs on September 2, 1802, in Green
County, Kentucky. Her husband died on the 20th of August 1848. She
was still a widow. Because of her age and bodily infirmity she was
unable to travel or to attend court to make the declaration.

March 17, 1855, Green County, Kentucky, Polly Skaggs, widow of
William Skaggs, deceased, aged 75 years (1780) (notice the
discrepancy in her age), made her application for a pension and was
drawing the same from the agency in Louisville. Her certificate is
dated May 17, 1853, No. 404. She now applied for bounty land.

William Skaggs of Green County, Kentucky, who was a private in the
company of Captain Mastin in the regiment of Colonel Shelby in the
Virginia Line for eleven months, was inscribed on the roll of
Kentucky at the rate of $36.66 per annum to commence on the 4th day
of March 1831. Certificate of pension issued August 21, 1833.

Polly Skaggs, widow of William Skaggs, was inscribed on the roll at
the rate of $36.66 per annum to commence on February 3, 1853.

April,----: The desposition of William Ratliff taken at the home ofWilliam
Skaggs, on Aleck Fork of Pitman's Creek pursuant to notice on the 27th of
April, l836, to be read as evidence on the trial of a suit in chancery now
pending in the Green Circuit court, in which Aaron and Jeremiah Lewis
was complainants and William Calvin, Charles Blevins and others are
defendants. The deponent being of lawful age and first duly sworndeposition
and saith:

I was acquainted with Moses Skaggs of Green County Kentucky. He had
four sisters to wit: Susanah who married one Richard Whit, Betsy or
Elizabeth, who md. John Hankins. Lydia who married Mathias Harman and
Nancy who md. William Meridy. I was acquainted with all of them in
the state of Virginia and quite intimate with them.

Question of complainants: Has (or have) Moses Skaggs or not one
brother by the name of John Skaggs.
Answer: Yes he had.

Question by same: Were or were not the sisters above named the only
sisters, which Moses Skaggs had?
Answer: Yes, they were all that I know of.

Question of same: State if you can when Moses Skaggs died and where
he lived at the time of his death.
Answer: I can not say certainly when he died, but think it has been
about forty years. He died at his house in Green County.

children?
Answer: He never had any children that I knew of. He had none I know
when he died.

    In the name of God, I Charles SKAGGS citizen of Green County, Kentucky, considering the mortality of human nature and that it was appointed for all men once to die and after committing my body to the ground any soul to God who gave it, I make and constitute this instrument of writing where unto my name is subscriber to be my last will and testament revoking all others. All my debts of which there is but few and snone of magnitude are to be paid and then what there remains I will and bequeath in the following manner. Green co., Ky.: This indenture made this 4th day of Oct. l84l between Richard Wade Skaggs of the one part and John Mears of the other part witnesseth that they County court of Green County by the order of said court made at the Oct. term thereof in the year l84l ordered John Barret Clerk of
said court to bind out the said Richard W. Skaggs---l4 years in March l842 to John Mears until the said Richard W. Skaggs shall arrive at the age of 21 years to learn the art trade and mystery of farming whereupn----of the said
order and the law in such case made and provided the said Richard Wade Skaggs by John Barret Clerk aforesaid---bind himself and apprentice. The said Richard to learn the said art trade and mystery of a farm and covenant that he will faithfully serve the said Mears in all his lawful business and
shall strictly observe all his reasonable commands and shall not at any time absent himself from business or depart without leave and all other things shall well and truly demand himself as an honest apprentice and the said John Mears on his part agrees and doth covenant to teach the said art trade and mystery in all it branches.

I believe that Richard Wade Skaggs is listed with Steven and Sarah Skaggs in l850. He was 2l years old. He was listed as being b. in La. So, he was b. about l827. I don't know who he belongs to, if any of you know, please contact me. Mo. was a part of La. purchase and was considered La. until about l806.

When he was 4l years old he md. a 2nd. time on Aug. 6, l868. At that time he lived in Taylor Co. He is listed as being b. in La. His father was b. Ky., and so was his mother. He md. Nancy Thompson. She was 24, her 2nd marriage. She lived in Taylor Co., but was b. Green Co., Ky. They were md. at Mary Underwoods.

Green co., Ky., Order Books: Sept. 2, l836, John Skaggs vs. Jeremiah Skaggs. This day came the complainants by his counsel and filed his bill herein and on his motion and its appearing to the satisfaction of the courts that Jeremaih Skaggs, Richard Wade & Mary his wife formerly Skaggs, Wm. Graham and Sally his wife formerly Skaggs, Stephen Skaggs, James Skaggs, Nancy Skaggs, Elizabeth Skaggs, Jeremiah Skaggs, James Skaggs, John Pearce & Letta his wife, Henry Skaggs, James Skaggs, John Patterson and Jane his wife, John Jackson and Elizabeth his wife are not inhabitants of this Commonwealth. It is therefore ordered by the court that unless the sd. non resident defendants to appear here on or before the lst day of Dec. term next and file their answer to the complainants bill that said bill will be
taken against them as confessed and the prayer thereof decreed accordingly.

Then John also sues William Skaggs & the same people are listed.

I might suggest that you write to the county clerk in Green Co., Ky. and see if he can send you a copy of this law suit. It might give more info. as to how all these people are kin to Richard W. I have found that these law suits sometimes gives tons of info. Ida at the top of Texas

If anyone is interested Lewis Jefferson Skaggs is the son of George Beryl Skaggs and Margaret Hopkins. George Beryl Skaggs is the son of William T. Skaggs and Susanna Reeves. I have researched the William T. Skaggs for many years because I am sure that he is the brother to my David Skaggs. William Downs said of him:  "I have no doubt but James Skaggs, was a man who supported as unspoiled a character as any other man upon earth, and was perhaps, as much esteemed by his neighbors.  His independence in religious sentiments, were not exceeded by any preacher."

It is therefore ordered by the court that unless the sd. non resident defendants to appear here on or before the lst day of Dec. term next and file their answer to the complainants bill that said bill will be

Maritime Commerce and the Founding of Wadesboro

On the Ponchatoula River early settler Richard Wade had established a location sometimes called Ponchatoula Landing, but usually referred to as Wade's Landing. Richard Wade and his wife Mary Ann Skaggs (Scuggs, Skeggs) settled in St. Helena Parish by 1812, owning land on the Natalbany River,  By 1819, Richard had established his landing on the Ponchatoula River.  Wade was a cotton planter and also engaged in commerce at his landing.  He was listed as owning 960 acres of land on tax lists in both 1824 and 1826 on the Ponchatoula River in what was
then St. Helena Parish.  He was also taxed as the owner of a tavern in 1826.  In later years he was to lay out a town at his landing and begin the settlement of Wadesborough.

Richard Wade to Mary Ann Robinson
13 November 1829

Know all men by these presents that I, Richard Wade of the parish of St. Helena and State of Louisiana, have this day for and in consideration of the sum of fifteen hundred dollars, cash to me in hand paid before the signing of the
presents by Mary Ann Robertson of the said parish and State, grant, bargain, sold transferred, and conveyed and by these presents do grant, bargain, sell, transfer and convey unto the said Mary Ann Robinson one half of a section of Land containing three hundred and twenty acres situate lying and being on the Ponchatola [sic] River on the east side of, Known by the name of Wades landing place, bounded on the north by Absolom Traylors land, on the east by lands of Jon Cone?, and on all other sides by vacant Lands. To have and to hold the afore said described premises unto the said Mary Ann Robinson, her heirs,
executors, administrators and assigns, and the said Richard Wade for himself, his heirs, executors, administrators and assigns unto the said Mary Ann Robertson, her heirs, and assigns shall and will warrant and forever defend the
aforesaid described premises, hereby warranting and defending the aforesaid land from the claim or claims of all and every person or persons whomsoever.

Done and passed before me Burlin Childress, parish Judge and ex officio notary public in and for said parish, on this Thirteenth day of November in the Year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and twenty nine in presence of Samuel Rankins, and Edward Gorman, witnesses who signed with me, the said Judge and notary.

The diary begins November 8, 1796 where Archibald says he started with his family from the Little River in Montgomery County (VA) and was traveling to Kentucky. He tells about places the family stayed over the next week when they reached the plantation of Mr.Stephen Yets (could be Yeats)where they took up winter quarters, leaving on March 8, 1797 and then"pressed our journeyfor Green River...The 20th of March 1797 we lay all night at dutchman plantation 5 miles from the Crab Orcherd. The21st lodged in the woods at the Nob lick. The 22nd lay in a very kind mans house. The 23rd lay all night at Mr. McColgens and the 24th got to Mr. Solomon Skaggs house.
