Philippa was born in Flanders, the daughter of William VI of Hainault and second cousin of Edward III. She married Edward on January 24, 1328, at York Minster. They had thirteen children, including five sons who lived into adulthood and whose rivalry would eventually bring about the long-running civil wars known as the Wars of the Roses.

The French writer Jean Froissart came with Philippa to England as her secretary, and his observations on life at court are a valuable source of information about this period. Philippa is remembered by history as a tender-hearted woman, who interceded with her husband and persuaded him to spare the lives of the six burghers of Calais, whom he had planned to execute as an example to the townspeople. She died of dropsy at Windsor, and was buried at Westminster.


Philippa of Hainault (~1314 - August 15, 1369) was the Queen consort of Edward III of England.

Philippa was born in Flanders (modern Belgium) and was the daughter of William III, Count of Hainaut and Jeanne de Valois, the granddaughter of Philip III of France. She married Edward at York Minster, on October, 1327, nine months after his accession to the English throne and, unlike many of her predecessors, she did not alienate the English people by retaining her foreign retinue upon her marriage or bringing large amounts of foreigners to the English court.

Philippa accompanied Edward on his expeditions to Scotland (1333) and Flanders (1338-40), where she won acclaim for her gentleness and compassion. She is also remembered by history as the tender-hearted woman, who interceded with her husband and persuaded him to spare the lives of the Burghers of Calais whom he had planned to execute as an example to the townspeople.

William III of Avesnes (1286 – June 7, 1337) was count William I of Hainaut, count William III of Holland and count William II of Zeeland from 1304 to his death, succeeding his father, John II.

Before becoming count, he was defeated by Guy of Namur at the battle on the island of Duiveland in 1304. Guy and duke John II of Brabant then conquered most of Zeeland and Holland, but these territories were recovered again when william became the new count in the same year. William continued the war with Flanders until the peace of Paris in 1323, where the count of Flanders denounced all claims on Zeeland.

William had occupied most of the bishopric of Utrecht and tried to conquer Friesland. Many of his daughters married with important rulers of Europe and he was called the father in law of Europe. The king of England and the Holy Roman Emperor were married to his daughters, while he was married to the sister of the king of France. William tried to gain support of surrounding counties and duchies for a anti-French coalition.

Internally, William restored order and founded new institutions, like the treasury and the chancellory. The council of the count got more responsibilities.

He married Jeanne of Valois, sister of king Philip VI of France, in 1305 and had the following children:

Margaret II of Flanders (1202-1278 ) was countess of Flanders from 1244 to 1278 and countess of Hainaut from 1244 to 1246
She was the younger daughter of Baldwin I of Constantinople , who was also count of Flanders and Hainaut , and Marie of Champagne . He left on the Fourth Crusade before she was born, and her mother left two years later, leaving Margaret and her older sister Jeanne in the guardianship of their uncle Philip of Namur.

After her mother died in 1204 , and her father the next year, the now-orphaned Margaret and her sister remained under Philip's guardianship until 1208 , when he gave their wardship to King Philip II of France .

In 1212 Margaret married Bouchard d'Avesnes, a prominent Hainaut nobleman. This was apparently a love match, though it was approved by Margaret's sister Jeanne, who had herself recently married. The two sisters subsequently had a falling out over Margaret's share of their inheritance, which led Jeanne to attempt to get Margaret's marriage dissolved. She alleged that the marriage was invalid, and without much inspection of the facts of the case Pope Innocent III condemned the marriage, though he did not formally annul it.

Bourchard and Margaret continued as a married couple, having 2 children, as their conflict with Jeanne grew violent and Bouchard was captured and imprisoned in 1219 . He was released in 1221 on the condition that the couple separate and that Bouchard get absolution from the pope. While he was in Rome, Jeanne convinced Margaret to re-marry, this time to William of Dampierre , a nobleman from Champagne.
This situation caused something of a scandal, for the marriage was possibly bigamous , and violated the church's strictures on consangunity as well. The disputes regarding the validity of the 2 marriages and the legitimacy of her children by each husband continued for decades, becoming entangled in the politics of the Holy Roman Empire .

In 1246 king Louis IX of France , acting as an arbitrator, gave the right to inherit Flanders to the Dampierre children, and the rights to Hainaut to the Avesnes children. This would seem to have settled the matter, but in 1253 problems arose again. The eldest son, John d'Avesnes was uneasy about his rights, convinced William II, Count of Holland to seize Hainaut and the parts of Flanders which were within the bounds of the empire. William of Holland was, as emperor-elect, overlord for these territories, and also John's brother-in-law. 1154 - 1218 Robert de Dreux 64 64 Robert II of Dreux (1154–28 December 1218), Count of Dreux and Braine, was the eldest surviving son of Robert I, Count of Dreux, and Agnes de Baudemont, countess of Braine, and a grandson of King Louis VI of France.

He participated in the Third Crusade, at the Siege of Acre and the Battle of Arsuf. He took part in the war in Normandy against the English between 1195 and 1198 and in the Albigensian Crusade in 1210. In 1214 he fought alongside King Philip Augustus at the Battle of Bouvines.
His first marriage with Mahaut de Bourgogne (1150–1192) in 1178 ended with separation in 1181 and produced no children. His second marriage to Yolande de Coucy (1164–1222) produced several children, the sons including Robert III (c. 1185–1234), Count of Dreux and Braine, Peter (c. 1190–1250), Duke of Brittany, Henry of Dreux (c. 1193–1240) Archbishop of Reims and John of Dreux (c. 1198–1239), Count of Vienne and Macon.

He was given the byname Gasteblé (lit. wheat-spoiler) when he destroyed a field of wheat while hunting in his youth.

Along with his brother Peter, Duke of Brittany he fought with future Louis VIII of France in 1212 at Nantes and was captured there during a sortie. Exchanged after the Battle of Bouvines for William Longsword, Earl of Salisbury, he fought in the Albigensian Crusade, besieging Avignon in 1226. He was a supporter of Blanche of Castile during her regency after the death of Louis VIII in 1226.

In 1210 he married Aénor of Saint-Valéry (1192–1250) and they had several children, including Yolande (1212–1248), who married Hugh IV, Duke of Burgundy, John I (1215–1249), later Count of Dreux, Robert (1217–1264), Viscount of Châteaudun, and Peter (1220–1250), a cleric.

Count of Perche
He was the fifth son of Louis VI of France and Adélaide de Maurienne. Through his mother he was related to the Carolingians.
In 1137 he received the County of Dreux as an appanage from his father. He held this title until 1184 when he granted it to his son Robert II.
In 1139 he married Agnes de Garlande. By his second marriage in 1145 to Harvise d'Évreux, he became Count of Perche. By this third marriage to Agnes de Baudemont in 1152, he received the County of Braine-sur-Vesle, and the lordships of Fère-en-Tardenois, Pontarcy, Nesle, Longueville, Quincy-en-Tardenois, Savigny, and Baudemont.
Robert I participated in the Second Crusade and was at the Siege of Damascus in 1148. In 1158 he fought against the English and participated in the Siege of Séez in 1154.

The Vita Meinwerci names "Thiedericum, Meinwercum, Glismod et Azelam" as children of Immed and Athela, specifying that Glismod married "nobilis principis in Baioaria"[83]. m ---. The identity of the husband of Glismod is not known.

He has been associated with Adalbert "der Siegreiche" Markgraf der Ostmark, son of Liutpold I Markgraf der bayerischen Ostmark, Graf im Traungau, Sundergau und Donaugau & his wife Richwara im Sualafeldgau (-26 May 1055, bur Stift Melk).

The Annales Stadenses name "Lippoldo filio domine Glismodis" as husband of "Ida [de Elsthorpe]"[84].

It is unlikely that this refers to Liutpold, son of Markgraf Adalbert, who was installed as Markgraf der Ungarischen Mark in Dec 1043 and died soon afterwards, presumably childless as his younger brother succeeded their father in the Markgrafschaft. [One possible child]:

Widukind records that Meinwerk Bishop of Paderborn was "paterno genere a Thiedrico Mathilde reginæ fratre"[71].

The necrologium Abdinhofense records the death "IV Kal Feb" of "Immeth comes pater Meinwerci episocopi"[72].
m as her first husband, ADELA, daughter of WICHMANN [V] Graaf van Hamaland & his wife Liutgard of Flanders (-22 Mar [1014/16]).
The Vita Meinwerci names "uxorem de terra Saxoniæ, Athelam nomine" as wife of Immed[73]. Widukind records that Meinwerk Bishop of Paderborn was "materno a Wichmanno, Herimanni ducis nepote, propinquo Ottonis I"[74].
Alpertus names "Adela sorori domnae Liutgardae", commenting that Adela was "clamosa in voce, lasciva in verbis, veste composite, animo dissoluta", the subsequent paragraph recording that, after her sister died, Adela took all her property which she had intended for the church before "vidua lasciva" married Baldric as her second husband[75].
She married secondly (before 996) Baldric Count in Drenthe. "Otto?Romanorum imperator augustus" confirmed the rights and privileges of Kloster Elten naming "filiam Lutgardam?abbatissam [et] filia Adela?[et] Baldericus?maritus Adele" by charter dated 18 Dec 996[76].
The wife of "Baldericus" was the daughter of "Wicmanni, cuius maiores magnam partem Germaniæ et maxime circa littoral oceani imperia tenebant"[77].
Thietmar records that the wife of Baldric encouraged her husband to arrange for the murder of "Count Wichmann" in 1016[78].
She is named "Adelæ uxoris Baldrici" in a later (undated) passage recording her death[79]. The work of Thiodericus names "Ida comitissa eius [=Baldricus] coniunx" ("Ida" presumably being an error for "Adela") and records her death "11 Kal Apr" without specifying the year[80]. Immed [III] & his wife had five children:
