I am researching, along with several others, the ancestry of William MCCOY who married Joanna PAYNE in 1781. We have now found documentation proving his father was William MCCOY, at one time of Loudoun Co., MD. William MCCOY (Sr.) died in MD in 1764 and his wife Ann(a) was made executrix of his will. She then married John STUMP and had 2 more children, moving to Bedford Co., VA. In papers filed in Bedford Co., Thomas STUMP makes mention that William is his half brother and that Ann(a) is their mother.
It is a very common mistake to attach William MCCOY of Bedford Co. to Willis MCCOY, son of William MECOY in NC, but the William and John born to Willis are not the same as the William and John MCCOY of Bedford Co. circa 1785. I hope you can change your information to reflect our discovery. We are trying to dispel the connection to the NC MECOYs.

He was an adult by the year 1744 so we estimate his year of birth to be about 1723. His will was dated 8 July 1765. His land, Payne's Industry, was left to his sone John and his land, "That or None" to sone Flayll. He bequeathed a gold ring to his daugther, Joanna Payn. The rest of his estate was divided among his other children but they were not named in the will. No wife is named in the will..so she probably died before him. These children may have moved into Bedford Co. Flayl Payne is the first proven Payne and the progenitor of the Payne descendants of our line. He first appears in Prince George's County, Maryland court records in August of 1727. Flayl was among the first settlers of the new Colony to move inland from the coastal region as he received the 34th land survey in western Maryland.
Flayl Payne proved attendance in Maryland court in August of 1727. The case involved a John Whetenhall, a "chyrurgeon" who was asking that he be paid 3.36 pounds by James Bramwell for treatment of the wife of Andrew Bourne, servant to Bramwell. Testimony of the withnesses was not recorded but Bramwell was ordered to pay the doctor.
Flayl may have been the son of Robert and Ann Paine. The first appearance of Flayl in records occured the same year that Robert Paine died. This relationship, however, is not proven.
The surname of Payne was most commonly found spelled "Payne" however it has been seen spelled Payn, Pain and Paine. Flayl's given name was sometimes seen spelled Flail, Frail, Flayll, Flay'll and other ways as well.
As a surname, Flayle is English. It is found in London and in the counties of Norfolk, Hertfordshire, Essex, Suffolk, Buckinghamshire, Northumberland, Surrey , Cambridge, Somerset, Southhampton and Devon but is especially common in St. Lawrence, South Walsam and Norfolk. The surname of Frail (Flail) was found in 1756 in Lunenberg Co. , Virginia.
Flayle Payne was also found on a list of explorers, squatters and settlers in Monocacy Valley on 2 Nov 1730. He was listed in Prince George's County in 1730 as an Indian Scout. Flail Payne had land called Payne's Delight on the banks of the Potomac River in Frederick Co. MD near the present day town of Knoxville, MD. There was mention of a Frail Pain's Ferry at that sight in the 1760's.
Flayll Pain's will was dated 27 Oct 1764 in Frederick Co. MD. He signed with his initials, F. P. He left his estate, Payn's Industry to his son Thomas, the uper part of Payn's Delight to son John, and the lower part to his sons Flayll and Peter in equal parts. To his daughter Martha Nichols, he left one shilling sterling. The will was probated on 1 oct 1765 and no wife was mentioned indicating she preceded him in death. You will not find a record of a Flayle Payne marriage to Jane Booth, because it does not exist. Jane Booth was married to Thomas Stump. but never to Flayle Payne. A man told me that he posted this, because he misread something in my book.
