Nellie was born in 1882 in Henbury, Cheshire.1  Nellie's father was William Steer and her mother was Eliza Hardwick.  Her paternal grandparents were Thomas Steer and Jane Smith. She had a brother and two sisters, named William, Agnes and Annie.  She was the third oldest of the four children. She had three half-brothers and two half-sisters, named George, Tom, Walter, Eliza and Hariet.
