May was born in 1888 in Battersea, Surrey.1   May's father was William Henry Steer and her mother was Emily Vincent.  Her paternal grandparents were Thomas Steer and Charlotte Miller. She had five brothers and four sisters, named Henry, Edwin, Reginald, Arthur, Herbert, Emily, Gertrude, Agnes and Edith.  She was the youngest of the ten children.
