Martha was born in 1855 in Wisborough Green, Sussex.1  Martha's father was Charles Steer and her mother was Ann Mariner.  Her paternal grandparents were William Steer and Elizabeth Howick. She had four brothers and four sisters, named Reuben, Mordecai, Daniel, Charles, Catherine, Ruth, Elisabeth and Ann. She had an adopted sister named Alice.
