Harriot was born in 1877 in Cuckfield, Sussex.1  Harriot's father was Edwin Steer and her mother was Mary Ann Spooner.  Her paternal grandparents were Thomas Steer and Sarah steer. She had three brothers and four sisters, named William, Fred, Albert, Elizabeth, Emma, Sarah and Mary.  She was the seventh oldest of the eight children.
