Edward was born in 1843 in Pulborough and his baptism took place there on October 22nd, 1843.1 2  Edward's father was James Steer and his mother was Ursula Steyning.  His paternal grandparents are Thomas Steare and Mary Hawkins. He had eight brothers named James, William, Thomas, George, Charles, David, Harry and David.  He was the youngest of the nine children.
