Alice was born in 1893 in Billingshurst and her baptism took place there on October 29th, 1893.1 2  Alice's father was Albert Steer and her mother was Edith.  Her paternal grandparents were George Steer and Charlotte. She had three brothers and four sisters, named George, William, Christopher, Charlotte, Edith, Catherine and Fanny.  She was the fifth oldest of the eight children.
