Walter was born in 1869 and his baptism took place on October 3rd, 1869 in Amberley.1   Walter's father was Henry Steer and his mother was Sarah Humphrey.  His paternal grandparents were Thomas Steer and Elizabeth; his maternal grandparents were Thomas Humfrey and Maria. He had four brothers and two sisters, named Henry, George, Edwin, Alfred, Maria and Sarah.  He was the third oldest of the seven children.  He died at the age of 1 in 1870.
