Walter was born in 1866 and his baptism took place on August 12th, 1866 in Rudgwick, Sussex.1  Walter's father was George Steer and his mother was Miriam Dinale.  His paternal grandparents were John Steer and Eliza steer. He had four brothers and six sisters, named George, William, Edward, Mark, Eliza, Miriam, Rhoda, Kate, Alice and Ellen.  He was the eighth oldest of the eleven children.
