Virginia was born in 1865 in Godalming.1  Virginia's father was George Steer and her mother was Ann.  Her paternal grandparents were Henry Steer and Hannah Knight. She had a brother and two sisters, named Christopher, Catherine and Elizabeth.  She was the third oldest of the four children.
