Riley was born in 1895 in Egdean, Sussex.1  Riley's father was George Stear and his mother was Julia.  His paternal grandparents were William Steer and Mary Cobby. He had four brothers and a sister, named William, George, Leonard, Gilbert and Nora.  He was the fifth oldest of the six children.
