Mary was born in 1865 in Petworth and her baptism took place there on July 23rd, 1865.1 2  Mary's father was Robert Steer and her mother was Jane.  Her paternal grandparents were Thomas Steer and Jane Smith. She had a brother and two sisters, named Thomas, Edith and Elizabeth.  She was the second oldest of the four children.
