Mary was born in 1864 in Gosport, Hampshire.1  Mary's father was Thomas Steer and her mother was Elizabeth Hannah Samphire.  Her paternal grandparents were James Steer and Ursula Steyning. She had three sisters named Elizabeth, Caroline and Adelaide.  She was the second oldest of the four children.
