Mary was born about 1826.1  Mary's father was William Steer and her mother was Emily (Imlen). She had three brothers and seven sisters, named Henry, Maurice, James, Caroline, Eliza, Emily, Ruth, Charlotte, Esther and Mary.  She was the second oldest of the eleven children.
