Leonard was born in 1890 in Fittleworth.1  Leonard's father was George Stear and his mother was Julia.  His paternal grandparents were William Steer and Mary Cobby. He had four brothers and a sister, named William, George, Gilbert, Riley and Nora.  He was the third oldest of the six children.
