Jane was born in 1874 in Tillington Sussex.1  Jane's father was Benjamin John Steer and her mother was Mary Ann.  Her paternal grandparents are Benjamin Steer and Elizabeth Dillaway. She had two brothers and two sisters, named Benjamin, William, Mary and Kate.  She was the youngest of the five children.
