Jack was born in 1901 in Petworth.1  Jack's father was Thomas Steer and his mother was Caroline.  His paternal grandparents were William Steer and Mary Cobby. He had a brother and two sisters, named James, Fanny and Ada.  He was the youngest of the four children.
