Harty was born in 1871 and her baptism took place on September 24th, 1871 in Midhurst.1   Harty's father was Thomas Steer and her mother was Harriett Ward. She had five brothers and six sisters, named George, Thomas, Charlie, Joseph, Alfred, Kate, Lydia, Bessie, Annie, Lydia and Bessie.
